It's been a few days since Miley Cyrus took the stage at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday (Aug. 25) and shook the earth to its very core with her twerking. Many, many people have taken the opportunity to earn themselves some press by slamming the pop star's performance -- except Justin Timberlake.
Speaking with Jim Douglas of Fresh 102.7 in NYC on Tuesday, Timberlake argued that Cyrus' haters ought to back off. "She's young, she's letting everyone know she's growing up," he said, adding that the particular event was an important factor when deciding whether the performance was proper or not. "It was the VMAs, what did you guys expect? It's not like she did it at the Grammys. Let her do her thing."
Timberlake, who won the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award at the event while reuniting with NSYNC, pointed out that Cyrus is hardly the first person to raise a few eyebrows in the event's history. "Madonna, wedding suit," he reminded. "Britney [Spears], strip tease."
His favorite part of Cyrus' performance had nothing to do with the pop star, however. "My favorite part of the Miley Cyrus thing was the Smith family reaction," he said. "I was late to the game on that. I was just shown that this morning, so it's fresh in my mind." Someone needs to clarify for JT that the Smith clan was responding to Lady Gaga and not Cyrus, as initially believed.
Do you think Timberlake's support of Cyrus is warranted?
